LOS ANGELES – The No. 22 UCLA women's tennis team put on a dominant singles display Monday afternoon, defeating No. 7 California by a 6-1 score in a non-conference match at Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Bruins (3-3) surrendered the doubles point, but bounced back to take each singles decision. Just one contest needed a third set. Kimmi Hance clinched the overall win. Hance and Sasha Vagramov each logged wins on the singles and doubles courts. The Golden Bears dropped to 6-4 with the loss.

Cal got off on the right foot on the second doubles court, where Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm handed the 33rd-ranked combination of Ava Catanzarite and Abbey Forbes a 6-2 loss. Hance and Vagramov would pull UCLA even on Court 3, however, posting a 6-3 victory versus Erin Richardson and Julia Rosenqvist. Hance and Vagramov have won each of their three dual matches as a tandem and five of six in all.

The seesaw battle on the doubles courts would eventually side with the Golden Bears, though, as Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov held off No. 16 Elysia Bolton and Elise Wagle, 6-4, on the top court.

With the help of some comeback efforts, the Bruins took control of the match by seizing each of the singles first sets. First to transition to a second was No. 76 Forbes, who made quick work of Giavara with a 6-1, 6-1 result on Court 1. Forbes has won four of five singles decisions in dual-match play.

Next off was Forbes' doubles mate, Catanzarite, who posted her first-career win against a nationally-ranked opponent. Her 6-2, 6-3 triumph over No. 99 Hannah Viller Moeller gave UCLA its first lead of the day.

In a matchup of top-100 opponents on Court 2, No. 100 Bolton bested No. 51 Jessica Alsola, 6-3, 6-2, to increase the Bruins' lead to 3-1. Then, No. 112 Kimmi Hance provided her first-ever clinching win with a 6-4, 6-4 result over Rosenqvist. Hance trailed 0-3 in the first set before mounting her comeback.

No. 115 Vagramov upped UCLA's lead to 5-1, as she won for the second time this season against a ranked player. She defeated No. 110 Valentina Ivanov on Court 3, 6-4, 6-2.

In a match that needed three tiebreakers, Wagle outlasted Makenna Thiel on Court 5 to complete the sweep. Wagle trailed by a 1-5 margin in the first set before turning it around. After rebounding to take the first set, Wagle narrowly dropped the second. A 10-point tiebreaker was utilized with the overall decision made and Wagle prevailed, 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 1-0(4).

The Bruins return to action Friday, when No. 10 USC pays a visit to LATC for a non-conference clash. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PT.
