Bears Host Gaels In Midweek Home Opener

BERKELEY -- California softball is set to open the 2022 home slate with a 2 p.m. first pitch against Saint Mary's at Levine-Fricke Field on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. All midweek Cal home games will be free admission events.         

It's the first matchup this season between the two East Bay rivals after the Bears took both contests from the Gaels during the 2021 campaign. Cal won 5-4 in Berkeley during the opening weekend of the season and earned a 6-1 decision in Moraga in early April.

  • Cal is off to its best start since the 2018 season at 7-3.
  • Tatum Anzaldo leads the Pac-12 Conference with 18 hits and is fourth with a .514 batting average through the first two weeks of the season.
  • Makena Smith is third in the Pac-12 with a .517 average at the plate and has recorded at least one hit in all 10 of Cal's games to start the season. She leads the team in RBI (13) and home runs (4) which is tied for the fourth-most in the conference.
  • Sona Halajian is swinging a hot bat to begin the season, tallying a .448 average, third-best on the squad. Halajian also threw a complete game in Cal's 3-1 win over Illinois State, giving up just one unearned run while scattering four hits.
  • Freshman Acacia Anders has quickly made her presence known in the Golden Bears' lineup, starting all 10 games in the infield while hitting in the two spot. Anders is hitting .353 and has recorded at least one hit in nine of 10 games. The Vacaville native smacked her first career home run on Feb. 20 against Minnesota.
