Ducks in the Chase at The Prestige

Feb 22, 2022

ED NOTE: Following the completion of the second round, Oregon moved up to a tie for first with Texas Tech.

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Oregon head coach Casey Martin has witnessed a lot of things during his golfing career.

But the second round of The Prestige may have been a first. Extreme winds created sandstorm-like conditions on the Greg Norman Course and caused a stoppage of play shortly after the Ducks, who entered Tuesday with a share of the lead, made the turn.

"The conditions were crazy," Martin said. "It felt like we were playing in a hurricane."

Play resumed late in the afternoon but none of the 12 teams in the second flight, including Oregon, were able to complete their rounds. The Ducks stood tied for fifth at 25-over. Three Ducks finished their second rounds, but Owen Avrit and Nate Stember will have to play their final three holes Wednesday morning.

Host UC Davis had the lead at 14-over when play was suspended for the day due to darkness, but the Aggies still have nine holes to complete in their second round. The same was the case for second place Oregon State (+22) and TCU which was tied for third with No. 14 Kansas at plus-24.

The clubhouse leader was No. 7 Texas Tech which was tied with the Ducks at 25-over after shooting a 10-over 294 Tuesday morning. The Red Raiders and No. 5 Pepperdine were the only two teams to record rounds of less than 20 strokes over par as the weather conditions sent scores soaring throughout the day.

Individually, four Ducks were in the top 33 when play was halted for the day. Greg Solhaug was tied for 15th at 5-over after a 77 (plus-6) on Tuesday. Both Avrit and Stember were tied for 25th at 7-over. Eric Doyle had one of the best rounds of the day, a 4-over 75, and was tied for 33rd at 8-over 150.

Quotable
Head coach Casey Martin
"We made some mistakes but overall we are doing well. We need a good round tomorrow to give ourselves a chance because there are some amazing teams competing here."
Notable: Jose Islas had his first eagle as a Duck on the par-5 12th hole. He also had two birdies and shot a 6-over 77 Tuesday. There are six top-25 teams at the Prestige include three top-10 teams (No. 5 Pepperdine, No. 7 Texas Tech, No. 9 Stanford).
