No. 16 USC Men's Basketball To Play At Oregon State On Thursday

The No. 16 USC Trojans (23-4, 12-4) will play at Oregon State (3-22, 1-14) at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. on Feb. 24 at 8 p.m.   The game will air on ESPN2 with Roxy Bernstein and Corey Williams calling the action. USC's 23-4 start is its best since also starting 23-4 during the 1974 season. USC was 24-4 after 28 games in 1974 and 23-5 after 28 games in 1992.

WINNING WAYS -- USC has won 70 games over the last three seasons (22 in 2020, 25 in 2021 and 23 in 2022), one short of the school record of 71 wins over three seasons (2016-18). The three consecutive seasons of 20+ wins also equals the school record for most consecutive 20-win seasons set from 2016-18.  The USC record for regular season wins is 24 set in 1971 (24-2)

FACING OREGON STATE -- Oregon State (3-22, 1-14)  is coming off a 73-53 loss at ASU on Feb. 19 to push its losing streak to 12 consecutive games.  USC defeated OSU 81-71 on Jan. 13 in Los Angeles.  Jarod Lucas leads OSU in scoring at 13.0 points per game.  USC owns a 76-66 all-time record against OSU (2 wins vacated due to NCAA penalty, original record 78-66).  USC has won 9 of its last 12 games against OSU. The Trojans lost 58-56 in Corvallis last season.

IT STARTS WITH DEFENSE -- USC held Washington State to 31.7 percent shooting on Feb. 20 and has held 19 of its 27 opponents to under 40 percent shooting this season.  USC is holding the opposition to a 37.5 shooting percentage, 6th in the country.  USC held its first 12 opponents under 40 percent shooting in each game and to a combined 35.2 shooting percentage, which was second in the country.  The Trojans were the first team in the last 15 seasons to hold its first 12 opponents to under 40 percent shooting in each game. 

ELLIS' 21 IS A PERFECT HAND FOR USC -- Washington State made 15 3-pointers, but it was a 2-pointer from Boogie Ellis just inside the free throw stripe which decided USC's 62-60 win on Feb. 22.  USC trailed 57-51 with 5:30 remaining, then outscored the Cougars 11-3 for the win.  Buckets by Chevez Goodwin and Drew Peterson, plus a pair of free throws by Ellis tied the game at 57-all with 4:18 left.  WSU then made a free throw and FG to take a 3-point lead, only to have a Max Agbonkpolo corner 3-pointer tie the game at 60-all with 2:15 remaining.  WSU missed its next 3 shots and USC its next 2.  After Andy Enfield called a timeout with 20 seconds left, Ellis drove into the lane and hit a pull-up jumper over Tyrell Roberts with 0.2 seconds left for the win.  WSU made 20 baskets, 15 of which were 3-pointers, scoring 45 of its 60 points from beyond the arc.  The 15 3-pointers made were the most by a USC opponent since Cal Baptist made a USC opponent record 20 3-pointers on Nov. 25, 2020.  WSU led 32-28 at halftime and by as many as 8 points in the second half.  Ellis finished with a game-high 21 points and Peterson added 17.

AGBONKPOLO'S PERFECT 10 -- Max Agbonkpolo was 2-for-2 in field goals, both three-pointers, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line to finish with 10 points in the 62-60 win against WSU on Feb. 20.  His three-pointer with 2:15 remaining tied the game at 60-all.  It was his first time scoring in double figures in eight games (Jan. 24 vs. ASU).

GOODWIN EYES THE TOP OF THE HILL -- USC forward Chevez Goodwin has played in 165 career games, second all-time among NCAA Division I players behind Jordan Bohanon of Iowa who has played in 168 through Feb. 21.  The NCAA record for games played entering this season was 157 by David Lighty of Ohio State (2007-11).  Goodwin has played in 60 games as a member of the Trojans' program.

THE TOASTS OF THE COASTS AND NCAA -  When USC defeated Pacific 74-68 on Feb. 8 it completed an undefeated nonconference slate of 11-0.  USC was also undefeated during the 2016-17 nonconference schedule.  O00nly USC and Villanova (2016-17 and 2017-18) have posted two perfect nonconference seasons of 10 or more wins in the last six years.

OREGON ON DECK -- USC's next game will be at Oregon (17-10, 10-6) in Eugene, Ore. on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. Oregon will host UCLA on Feb. 24 before taking on USC. Guard Will Richardson leads the Ducks in scoring ith a 15.2 average. Oregon defeated USC 79-69 on Jan. 15 in Los Angeles, USC's largest margin of defeat this season.  USC is 66-59 all-time against Oregon.  USC has gone 1-9 in its last 10 trips to Eugene. 

LEADERS OF THE PAC -- USC is the conference leader in wins among Pac-12 teams for the past five seasons (since the 2017-18 season) through games of Feb. 21.  USC is 58-32 in conference games during that stretch, while Oregon is 57-31, Arizona is 57-32, UCLA is 57-32 and Colorado is 52-39.

GOODWIN'S IMPROVEMENT STANDS OUT - Chevez Goodwin has started all 27 games and is averaging 12.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and ranks 18th in the country in shooting percentage (58.4). Last season, Goodwin averaged 5.6 points and 3.5 rebounds and made one start. Goodwin had 18 rebounds at Colorado on Jan. 20, the most by a Trojan since Nick Rakocevic also had 18 vs. Vanderbilt on Nov. 11, 2018.  Also, his 9 offensive rebounds on Jan. 13 were the most by a Trojan since Taj Gibson had 10 on Nov. 20, 2008 vs. Seton Hall.  Goodwin has recorded seven rebounds or more in 15 games this season and has scored nine or more points in 21 games. Goodwin scored his USC high of 24 points on Jan. 17 vs. Washington.  USC is 20-1 in games this season when Goodwin scores at least 9 points.
