White And Scharf Earn Pac-12 Weekly Awards

Feb 22, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO – Following a historic win on Sunday, No. 15 Sun Devil Gymnastics earned two Pac-12 weekly awards with sophomore Emily White being named the gymnast of the week and junior Hannah Scharf getting the coaches choice of the week.

These are the first two weekly awards of the season for Arizona State (3-3, 3-2 Pac-12). White is the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week, her third weekly award of her career after nabbing two last season. For Scharf, this is her first time getting the Pac-12 Coaches Choice of the Week nod and her third overall weekly award. She was the most recent gymnast of the week for ASU after earning the honor in 2021.

The pair put up major scores to help Arizona State beat No. 15 UCLA for the first time since 2001. The Sun Devils scored a 197.800, the seventh-highest team score in program history, with season highs on each event. The floor score of 49.525 is the highest the Gym Devils have seen since 2004.

With only three previous all-around scores to her name, White won the all-around title in the team win against No. 15 UCLA on Sunday. Her 39.600 in the all-around is not only a career high but is also tied for 21st-highest score in ASU program history. It is the highest all-around total for a Gym Devil since 2007. En route to that total, White reached a career high on vault (9.925) and tied her career high on floor (9.875). Her vault score received a perfect 9.950 from one judge. She also reached a season high on bars (9.900) and beam (9.900). Those scores gave her the event titles on vault and beam in addition to the all-around crown.

Scharf celebrated her birthday on Sunday by matching her career high on bars (9.900) and beam (9.900), while earning new season highs on floor (9.925) and in the all-around (39.525). She tied with White for the beam title, her first on that event this season. In the first NQS rankings, Scharf is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the all-around with a 39.405 NQS.
