#22 Softball Heads to Austin for Texas Classic

Feb 23, 2022

AUSTIN, TX – After hosting two tournaments at Farrington Stadium, No. 22 Sun Devil Softball will partake in their first road tournament of the 2022 season from Feb. 25-27 in the Texas Classic hosted by the University of Texas at Austin. ASU was originally scheduled to play five games in the span of three days, but due to inclement weather, the Sun Devils will play three games - No. 23 Texas on Friday, Feb. 25 with Texas State and UTSA on Sunday, Feb. 27.
The Sun Devils will take on the Longhorns at 1:00 p.m. on Friday to begin the Classic followed by a day break for all the teams on Saturday due to inclement weather predicted to happen. On Sunday, ASU will close out their Texas adventure with a double header beginning at 8:30 a.m. against Texas State followed by UTSA at 11 a.m.
This will be the first road tournament for ASU softball since the abbreviated 2020 season when the team traveled to Cathedral City, California for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic when it went 3-3 when it run-ruled its first three games winning by at least 12 runs in each of those. Current Sun Devil upperclassmen Alynah Torres, Bella Loomis and Halle Harger all had parts in the offense in the eight home runs scored in one day throughout their lone away tournament of that season.
ASU won four of its five games in last weekend's Littlewood Classic that was hosted in Tempe as the Sun Devils won those four games all on run-rules. Walk-off home runs was the story of the weekend as Jazmine Hill had a walk-off home run to end the game in an 8-0 shutout of Minnesota in the opening game and Mailey McLemore had her first home run of the season to end the game in five innings in a 10-0 shutout of UTEP.

Sophomore Emily Cazares also made her way onto the stat sheet against UTEP when she hit her first collegiate home run. Redshirt freshman Kristiana Watson has been hot in the box with three home runs, seven hits and 1.000 slugging percentage. Hill (.963) and true freshman Cydney Sanders (.900) are close behind Watson's leaderboard slugging.

The four women pitching staff - Lindsay Lopez, Mac Morgan, Marissa Schuld and Allison Royalty - have out thrown their opponents in strikes, 65-51 and have a combined ERA of 2.61 after ten games.
