Carson Barry Takes Second To Pace OSU Men’s Golf In La Quinta

Feb 23, 2022

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Oregon State senior Carson Barry shot a 1-under 70 Wednesday to finish 1-under par at The Prestige, taking home second place at the 24-team tournament.

Barry was just one of two players, among 120 overall, who finished under par over the three-day event. He posted a 71 at par the first two rounds, and followed that up with his 70 in the finale, finishing two strokes behind winner Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech.

"Carson played some awesome golf this week," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It's not often in college golf you only see two players under par. This course tests all facets of your game and really requires precise iron play."

Barry picked up four birdies Wednesday to pace the Beavers, who finished tied for fifth with a 38-over 890. The tournament was held at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West, a par-71, 7,100 course. Vanderbilt, which finished at 16-over 868, won the tournament.

Barry finished at 4-under par in par-5 holes, tying for second-best in the 120-player event. He picked up 10 total birdies, which was among the event's leaders, but trailed teammate Mateo Fuenmayor, who tallied 11. Oregon State, as a team, finished with 32.

Fuenmayor placed in a tie for 28th with a 10-over 223. He finished at 4-over 75 on Wednesday, equaling his mark from his opening round on Monday. He concluded his second round of action Wednesday morning – the Beavers were a number of teams who couldn't finish play Tuesday due to wind – with a 2-over 73. The tie for 28th equals his season-best finish.

Jackson Lake had his best round of the trip Wednesday, finishing at 2-over 73. That pushed him to a tie for 45th overall at 13-over 226.

Like Lake, Nolan Thoroughgood also had his best round in the final 18, posting a 1-over 72. He ended the visit at 20-over 233 to place in a tie for 92nd.

Brandon Eyre, meanwhile, tied for 114th at 26-over 239.

The Beavers have a quick turnaround as they compete in the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate starting Monday. It is a three-day event at the Reflection Bay Golf Club.
