Four Utes Headed To 2022 Women’s National Team Open Program
SALT LAKE CITY – Utah volleyball will have four student-athletes representing the program at the U.S. Women's National Team Open Program this Friday through Sunday, Feb. 25-27 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The three-day event will be held at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center.
Heading to the open tryouts will be fifth year Madelyn Robinson, along with rising juniors Amelia Van Der Werff, Allie Olsen, and Vanessa Ramirez. Utah Volleyball head coach Beth Launiere will also be attending as a lead evaluator for the event.
Robinson is coming off a second-straight All-Pac-12 campaign for the Utes in her senior season, as well as her first selection to the AVCA Pacific South All-Region team. Robinson averaged 3.01 kills per set overall in the 2021 season and totaled 340 kills. She totaled seven double-doubles, which included four coming in conference play. During her senior year, Robinson recorded a career high in kills (20), a career high in digs (16) and posted a career high in blocks (5). She reached 10 or more kills in 19 matches this season to aid Utah's offense.
Van Der Werff and Olsen served as Utah's primary middle blockers throughout the season and finished the year averaging 1.05 and 1.02 blocks per set, respectively. Olsen collected a team-best 85 total blocks in her sophomore season and Van Der Werff added 69 blocks. Van Der Werff recorded the best hitting percentage on the team after recording a .380 clip in her first season with the Utes, which also ranked fifth in the Pac-12. She hit above .300 and posted five or more kills in 10 matches. Olsen recorded eight matches of at least five kills and .300 or better hitting. She hit .295 this past season, which ranked second on the team behind her fellow middle blocker in Van Der Werff.
Rounding out the Utes headed to the U.S. Open Tryouts is Utah's starting libero in Ramirez. Ramirez led the team with 3.37 digs per set in 2021 and 381 digs total. She posted double-digit digs in 24 of 31 matches during her sophomore campaign and also earned a pair of double-doubles with a career-best 10 assists in two matches. Ramirez totaled 26 aces this year, which ranked third on the team, and recorded a career-high four aces in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Utah Valley.
