Split on Day 1
HONOLULU – The No. 7 Stanford Beach Volleyball team started its season with a doubleheader against No. 2 UCLA and No. 10 Hawai'i Friday at the Heineken Duke Kahanamoku Classic at Queen's Beach in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Cardinal earned its first win of the season in a hard-fought battle with the Rainbow Warriors 4-1 after falling to the Bruins by the same score.
Stanford's No. 1 pair clinched the Cardinal's first win of the season in a three-set battle with the Rainbow Warriors, ending the Hawai'i comeback attempt with a 15-12 third-set victory. Sophomore Kate Reilly and senior Charlie Ekstrom led the way for the Cardinal, earning a 2-0 record on the day as Stanford's No. 2 pair.
The Cardinal returns to action on Saturday with its final match of round-robin play, taking on Saint Mary's at noon. After its meeting with the Gaels, Stanford will compete in one of two semifinals matches (scheduled for 2 or 4 p.m.) and winners of each semifinal will compete in a finals match at 6 p.m.
