Colorado Captures Mile Titles

Feb 26, 2022

SEATTLE – The Colorado track and field program finished up action here Saturday at the 2022 Pac-12  Indoor Invitational with a pair of titles in the mile races, including a school record from Eduardo Herrera.

Herrera captured his third CU school record in the men's mile, dominating the race in 3:57.16. He now owns more school records than any CU male with the outdoor 1,500-meter record, indoor 3,000 and the mile. Herrera's mark will be outside of the time needed to qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championship, but his 3,000-meter mark should be good enough to get him in.

The men also had strong showings with Andrew Kent finishing fourth in 4:00.59 and Noah Hibbard finishing seventh in 4:01.69.

In the women's race, Madie Boreman led a trio of CU women across the line, finishing the mile in 4:33.59. She was joined by Micaela Degenero finishing second in 4:34.49 followed by Rachel McArthur in 4:35.45 in third. Boreman's mark should get her through to NCAAs, while Degenero is around 12th in the NCAA and McArthur is around 16th depending on meets around the nation.

Another CU woman with an extraordinary race was Abbey Glynn in the women's 400. Glynn finished second in the race, breaking the 53-second barrier in 52.69 seconds. She becomes just the second Buff ever under 53 seconds in school history. She was joined by Emma Pollak who finished seventh in 54.85 seconds.

Rounding out the distance events, Emily Covert finished fourth in the women's 3,000 in 9:04.20 while Austin Vancil finished seventh in the men's race in 7:55.54. Ryan Lindrud also picked up a sixth-place finish in the 800 in a time of 1:51.82.

Colorado had a pair of individuals in the finals of the hurdles with Avery McMullen finishing sixth in the women's race in 8.41 and Noah Bouchard finishing sixth in 8.47 in the men's race. Both also were in the high jump with McMullen finishing eighth on misses while Bouchard finished fourth with a clearance of 2.08 meters (6-9.75).

In the women's high jump, McMullen, Kylee Harr and Allie Routledge all cleared 1.70 meters (5-7). Harr and Routledge went into a four-way tie for fourth, while McMullen finished eighth based on misses.

The final events of the day were the 4x400-meter relays. Tyler Williams and Aaron McCoy, fresh off finishing sixth and seventh in the open race, helped lead the CU men to fourth overall in 3:10.83. Glynn and Pollak helped the CU women finish fifth in 3:40.24.

Colorado will likely send five to six individuals to the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala., in two weeks with the two or three women in the mile, Herrera in the 3,000, Covert in the 5,000 and McMullen in the pentathlon. The rest of the team will turn their attention outdoors for the opening meet at home Mar. 18th and 19th.
