Dawgs Split Opening Day of Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Huskies split day one of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, dropping one to San Diego State, 5-7, before bouncing back to defeat Loyola Marymount, 2-0.

Baylee Klingler's second career grand slam provided a major spark to the Husky bats in the bottom of the third, but the Aztec offense was relentless. SDSU outhit Washington, 9-5, and they also left seven on base.

Gabbie Plain earned the win against Loyola Marymount, striking out a season-high 10 Lions. Sami Reynolds and Kelley Lynch each had RBI hits to secure the Husky win.

SAN DIEGO STATE SCORING

3rd: The Aztecs got on the board first with a double that brought in two runs.

3rd: SDSU scored on a fielder's choice.

3rd: Baylee Klingler hit her second career grand slam, scoring Sami Reynolds, Rylee Holtorf and Jenn Cummings.

4th: A collection of singles put another on the board for SDSU.

4th: Kelley Lynch answered with her first homer of the 2022 season.

6th: With the bases loaded, SDSU scored and advanced on a passed ball.

6th: An Aztec double brought in two more runs.

SAN DIEGO STATE NOTES

 Baylee Klingler hit the second grand slam of her career, and of the season.

Kelley Lynch hit her first home run of the season, 15th of her career.

As a team, the Dawgs collected five hits and only left one on base.

Sarah Willis started the game in the circle, but Brooke Nelson, Kelley Lynch and Pat Moore (in that order) also saw time at the pitcher position. Together, they earned eight strikeouts and only walked two.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT SCORING

4th: Sami Reynolds singled to left field, scoring Angie Yellen, who was on as a pinch runner for Olivia Johnson.

5th: Kelley Lynch singled to right field and collected an RBI, scoring Madi Huskey.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT NOTES

Megan Vandegrift earned the start at second, providing a spark defensively and recording a hit in her only at-bat.

Kelley Lynch has had a hit in each of the past four games (dating back to the win against then-No. 7 Oklahoma State).

Gabbie Plain recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts en route to her fifth complete game shutout victory of the year. The senior has pitched 38 innings and only allowed two runs. With her second strikeout of the day, Plain moved into second on the all time career strikeout list, behind only Danielle Lawrie. The Australian now has 904 career strikeouts.
