No. 2 UCLA Claims Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic Crown

The Bruins went 5-0 this weekend to win the Queen's Cup in Waikiki.

HONOLULU -- No. 2 UCLA (5-0) posted a 5-0 semifinal win over Saint Mary's (0-4) and a 4-1 win over No. 10 Hawai'i (2-3) in the title match on Saturday evening at the Heineken Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic at Queen's Beach. With the two victories, UCLA improved to 7-0 against Saint Mary's and 11-6 against Hawai'i, with the seventh-straight win over the BeachBows. Three Bruins were honored at the conclusion of the tournament. Sophomore Rileigh Powers was named the Queen's Cup's Best Defender while redshirt sophomore Jaden Whitmarsh and sophomore Devon Newberry were named the Best Pair.

In the semifinal win against the Gaels, a pair of Bruin veterans got UCLA on the board first as junior Abby Van Winkle and Powers easily dismantled Chandler Cowell and Selbie Christensen on court two, 21-6, 21-8.

Then the freshman duo of Natalie Myszkowski and Sophie Moore put the Bruins up 2-0 with a court four win over SMC's Trinity Durfee and Aeriel Sundt, 21-13, 21-18.

Redshirt freshman Tessa Van Winkle and freshman Jessie Smith clinched the dual victory with a 21-15, 21-11 win over Allie Cataldo and Laura Studebaker on court five.

Sophomore Lexy Denaburg and senior Lea Monkhouse took down Jasmin Suarez and Jennifer Laird in straight sets on court one, 21-19, 21-13, to put UCLA up 4-0.

Redshirt sophomore Maggie Walters and freshman Katie Hashman made their season debuts on court three and posted a straight-set win, 21-12, 21-16, to complete the sweep. It was Walter's second career win and was the collegiate debut for Hashman.

In the finals against Hawai'i, the Myszkowski and Moore put the Bruins up 1-0 with a court four win over the BeachBows' Sarah Penner and Ilihia Huddleston 21-13, 21-14.

Abby Van Winkle and Powers rallied to put UCLA up 2-0 with a three-set-thriller on court two over UH's Kylin Loker and Riley Wagoner, 18-21, 21-17, 15-8.

Whitmarsh and Newberry clinched the dual on court three with a straight-set win, 21-15, 21-15 over Jaime Santer and Megan Widener.

Hawai'i won its first point of the dual on court five when Anna Maidment and Sofia Russo held off a strong come-from-behind effort by Smith and Tessa Van Winkle, 22-20, 15-21, 15-11.

Denaburg and Monkhouse provided the 4-1 final with a straight-set win over Brooke Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau, 24-22, 21-14.

The Bruins return home to host the Battle for LA at Mapes Beach, March 5-6. UCLA will open with No. 1 USC at 10:00 a.m. PT on Saturday, March 5.
