Cal Sweeps DeMarini Invitational

Feb 27, 2022

STANFORD, Calif. – California softball picked up its fourth straight win at the DeMarini Invitational on Sunday, defeating Mount St. Mary's 9-1 in five innings behind a strong outing from Sona Halajian in the circle and at the plate.

Halajian led the Bears (12-3) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and four RBI, while going four innings in the circle, allowing just one run on three hits to earn her seventh win of the year.

Kacey Zobac added two more hits for California and Kennedy Thomas had a 2-for-2 day at the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal got in front early again, this time with a 2-out rally. Makena Smith singled up the middle to start it off and Halajian followed with a deep drive off the wall in right, bringing Smith all the way around.  Zobac came through with a laser shot to left center, her sixth hit of the weekend to make it 2-0 Cal after the top of the first.

The Bears kept the momentum going in the second frame, scoring five runs on three hits. The big one came on a Halajian 3-run shot to dead center, her fourth home run of the season. California added two more in the fifth when D'Asha Saiki recorded an RBI groundout to score Olivia Silvestre, who pinch ran for Zobac. Diamond Holland ran for Alexis Bishop after she singled and crossed the plate on a Mount error.
