Ducks Bounce Back with Two Wins at Mary Nutter

Feb 27, 2022

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – No. 9 Oregon bounced back from two opening day losses by defeating Seattle 8-0 and Cal State Fullerton 4-3 Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

How it Happened (Game 1): Oregon scored four times in the fifth inning and Stevie Hansen and Raegan Breedlove combined for the five-inning shutout of Seattle.

Ariel Carlson started the scoring with her second home run of the season in the second inning.

With two outs and two runners on in the third, Paige Sinicki tripled to right center to score Allee Bunker and Rachel Cid.

After a Kedre Luschar RBI groundout in the fourth made it 4-0, the Ducks struck for four runs in the fifth inning.

KK Humphreys led off with a double to left field before Cid plated her with a single up the middle.

Later in the fifth, Sinicki and Vallery Wong singled before Carlson was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Allison Benning, who singled to right field to score Wong and Sinicki. Benning was thrown out on the play trying to get to second base.

The Ducks scored their eighth run when Carlson scored on an error.

Hansen went 4.1 innings, allowed just one hit and struck out six in picking up her second win of the season. Breedlove came on in the fifth for the final two outs.

How it Happened (Game 2): Oregon (10-3) scored four runs via the long ball and made it stand up for a 4-3 win.

Cal State Fullerton scored twice in the second inning on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The damage would have been worse if not for Hanna Delgado, who made a spectacular diving catch running in from center field for the second out of the inning.

Oregon scored all of its runs in the third inning. Carlson singled, but was erased on Benning's fielder's choice. Luschar bunted for a base hit that moved Benning to second. Bunker then homered to left center to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead.

Delgado followed Bunker's blast with one of her own to right field for a 4-2 edge.

Makenna Kliethermes (4-2) allowed one run in the seventh, but went the distance for the win. She struck out seven batters.

Noteworthy: The Ducks hit back-to-back home runs for the first time since last May versus California. Against Seattle, Bunker, Sinicki and Benning all had two-hit games. Cid and Luschar had two hits versus Fullerton. Sinicki's triple was Oregon's first of the season.

On Deck: Oregon wraps up the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic by playing Long Beach State Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
