Karbach Round Rock Classic Champions

Feb 27, 2022

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Playing a pair of games to conclude the 2022 Karbach Round Rock Classic on Sunday, No. 6 Stanford (6-1) defeated Indiana (1-5) 13-0 in seven innings before shutting out No. 2 Arkansas (3-2) 5-0 to earn the tournament championship.

Following conclusion of play, five Stanford players earned spots on the All-Tournament team - including designated hitter Brett Barrera as Tournament MVP. Joining Barrera were infielders Adam Crampton and Tommy Troy, starting pitcher Quinn Mathews, and catcher Kody Huff.

Cardinal pitching allowed just one run over the three games in Round Rock, running its shutout total to four in seven games this year. The lone run came in the first inning of Friday's game vs. Louisiana as the Cardinal has now posted 24 consecutive scoreless innings.

Junior Brett Barrera guided the way offensively for the Cardinal in a 13-0 rout of Indiana to start the day, finishing 3 for 3 with four RBIs while serving as the designated hitter and batting eighth.

The Cardinal scored 13 runs on 14 hits, including five doubles. Junior Adam Crampton collected a pair of doubles to finish 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Drew Dowd earned the victory in a contest that ended after seven innings due to the run rule. Dowd dealt four scoreless innings and allowed three hits and two walks with a career-best eight strikeouts. The victory moved Dowd to 2-0 on the season.

Sophomore Joey Dixon tossed the final three scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out one to earn the save.

Stanford got on the board first in the second as Barrera laced a two-out, two-RBI single into left-center field.

The Cardinal added three runs in the fourth and fifth innings before tacking on five more in the sixth to put the run-rule into play. Barrera plated runs with RBI-singles in the fourth and fifth innings.

Carter Graham and Tommy Troy each finished with two hits and one RBI, as Troy doubled and scored twice to finish 2 for 3. Graham crossed three times for the Cardinal as part of a 2 for 4 day.

Reese Sharp was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two. Sharp dropped to 0-1 on the season with the setback.

In a clash of two top-10 teams in game two, junior Quinn Mathews turned in a career-best start, allowing just two hits and four walks with a career-best 10 strikeouts over six shutout innings against Arkansas. Mathews improved to 1-1 on the season after throwing 105 pitches.

Sophomore Tommy O'Rourke inherited a runner at first in the seventh inning, escaping that jam before striking out four in two innings of work.

Freshman Braden Montgomery took the ninth inning, working out of a bases-loaded and nobody out jam to seal the shutout. Montgomery struck out one as the Cardinal managed 15 strikeouts in the game.

Mathews faced one over the minimum through four innings – striking out seven over the span. He struck out five straight from the final out of the first through the first out of the third.

Continuing his torrid pace, Barrera went 2 for 5 with his second home run of the season and three RBIs to finish the day 5 for 8 with seven RBIs.

Barrera's two-run homer in the second broke a scoreless game and provided all the offense Mathews and the Cardinal bullpen would ultimately need. The Cardinal would add single runs in the third, fifth and ninth – including another RBI-single from Barrera in the fifth.

Troy batted 3 for 4 with a walk while hitting out of the second spot in the order.

Arkansas lefty Hagen Smith took the loss and dropped to 1-1 after surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings.

Stanford will conclude its trip in Texas on Monday when it travels to UTSA for an 11 a.m. PT first pitch.
