Feb 27, 2022

HARRISON, N.Y. – Washington State Tennis' late comeback came up just short as the 65th-ranked Cougars fell to No. 46 Columbia, 4-2, Sunday morning at the Life Time Westchester center.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 4-6 while Columbia improves to 9-3.
In doubles play, Columbia captured wins on courts 2 and 3 to take the opening point. Sophia Strugnell and Jennifer Kerr cruised past WUS's Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Elyse Tse at No. 3 while Rachele Rimondini and Shivani Amineni clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Yang Lee and Fifa Kumhom. At No. 1, WSU's Michaela Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy picked up their second-straight win with a 6-4 victory over Akanksha Bhan and Melissa Sakar.
In singles action, Columbia's lead grew to 2-0 as Julia Haynes defeated Lee 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. WSU found the scoreboard when Bayerlova defeated No. 90 Bhan in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-2, at No.1. It marked Bayerlova's ninth singles win in 10 matches this season.
After Kerr defeated Kumhom 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 to push the Lions' lead to 3-1, Ly-Nguyen drew the Cougars back to within one following a come-from-behind, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2. It marked the Cougar senior's team-leading 14th singles win of the season.
WSU needed both remaining matches but came up just shy, as Sakar engineered a late rally to defeat Tse, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 4, clinching the victory. The match at No. 6 was stopped with WSU's Hania Abouelsaad on serve late in the third set against Clarine Lerby, 7-5, 4-6, 4-5.
The Cougars are next in action Friday when they open Pac-12 play at No. 66 Arizona. Match time is set for 10 a.m. PT.
