Washington Shuts Out UCSD in Series Finale

Feb 27, 2022

The Washington Huskies entered Triton Ballpark at UC San Diego today looking to even the four-game series and finish their 8-game road trip over .500.

Their mission was clear and they wasted no time as McKay Barney doubled to right center on the first pitch of the game. Two batters later, AJ Guerrero drove him in with a single to right and the Huskies were on the board. In the bottom half, Case Matter got the start on the hill and got two quick outs before giving up a double and a walk. A fly out to center however, ended the Triton threat.

In the 2nd the Huskies picked up where they left off as Johnny Tincher sent a one-out double to left field and scored soon after on a Kyle Fossum double to right center. He would later score on Barney's second double in as many innings putting the Huskies up 3-0. In the bottom half of the 2nd, Matter remained sharp with only a walk recorded.

The Huskies started to open things up in the 3rd as singles by Will Simpson and Preston Viltz, a double by AJ Guerrero, and a triple by Kyle Fossum put three more on the board for a 6-0 score. In the bottom half, it was Bryce Armstrong's turn on the mound and he made quick work of the Tritons sitting them down in order after a leadoff single.

Barney led off the fourth with his third hit of the day, then stole second. Cam Clayton and Will Simpson each drew walks to load the bases. AJ Guerrero then stepped to the plate and delivered another run with a sacrifice fly to center to put the Huskies up 7-0.

From there the offense settled down a bit, but pitching continued to shine as Armstrong, Stefan Raeth, Stu Flesland III, and Ryan Velazquez held the Tritons to just 5 hits and 2 walks over the final 6 innings.

Guerrero and Tincher led the offense with 3 hits on the day and Raeth earned the Win improving his record to 2-0.
