No. 31 Cal Blanks UNLV 7-0

Feb 28, 2022
Derrick Chen improved to 6-2 with his singles win that clinched the result over UNLV.

BERKELEY – For a second straight dual match, No. 31 California men's tennis routed its opponent 7-0 at home and a Golden Bear freshman clinched the victory. On Monday, it was Derrick Chen's turn to secure the result, with the first-year Bear defeating UNLV's Zach Garner on court five at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Cal improved to 5-3 after the nonconference win, which followed Cal's 7-0 rout of Army on Saturday, when Carl Emil Overbeck clinched. UNLV fell to 4-6.
"We came out ready both times," said Kris Kwinta, Cal's Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis, who celebrated his birthday and the Bears' latest win on Monday. "It's not always easy to be 100-percent mentally ready for each match, but I thought the guys did a really good job preparing themselves and the coaching staff did well, too, getting these guys ready to compete from the first points."
The Bears – who head to the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship later this week – looked strong in doubles against the Rebels. The duo of Alex Chang and Philip Hjorth got the first result on court three, beating Garner and Christopher Bulus, 6-3. The 12th-ranked pair of Overbeck and Yuta Kikuchi clinched the doubles point when they beat Jackson Atherton and Jordan Sauer, 7-5, in a good battle on court one.
"We were challenged really hard today in doubles, and we responded well," Kwinta said. "We were definitely expecting them to come out firing. I was happy with the alertness of the guys."
In singles, Hjorth gave Cal a 2-0 lead when he knocked off Sauer, 6-2, 6-2, on court two. Sean Hill bested Zac Brodney, 6-3, 6-1, on court three, and then Chen clinched when he beat Garner, 6-4, 6-2. In the penultimate victory of the day, Kikuchi claimed a quality win when he defeated the 31st-ranked Bulus, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(4), on court one.
Cal plays in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship from Friday through Sunday in La Jolla, California.
