Mar 1, 2022

SACRAMENTO – Washington's women's golf team recorded its best finish of the 2021-22 season Tuesday, finishing second at the Gunrock Invitational, at Del Paso Country Club.

The Huskies entered the final round in second place and, thanks to nine birdies on the back nine, held on to it. Washington finished the tournament 15 strokes under par, with a three-round total of 849. No. 1-ranked Stanford (814) won the tournament, while Iowa State finished third, two shots back of the Huskies.

"We had a solid finish this week, and certainly could have played better," said UW head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I'm excited about the competition within the team and the way they bring out the best in each other. We're looking forward to building on this momentum."

For the second tournament in a row, Washington was led by sophomore Stefanie Deng, who finished the three rounds at 5-under, good for a tie for seventh place, her highest of the year.

She was joined in the top-10 by classmate Camille Boyd, who shot a 1-under 71 in round three, to finish 4-under overall, in a tie for ninth place. It was Boyd's second top-10 of the season.

Freshman Kennedy Knox was also 1-under on Tuesday, and finished in a tie for 12th place overall, at 3-under par, the best finish of her freshman season.

Another freshman, Jenny Chang, competing for the first time at the college level, finished in a tie for 26 in the 67-woman field, carding a 1-over par 73 in the third round to finish just one stroke over par for the tournament.

Brittany Kwon finished in 35th place overall, at 4-over for the tournament.

Washington's nest action comes at the Juli Inkster Invitational next Monday and Tuesday, March 7-8, at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
