Bears Play In Pacific Coast Doubles In La Jolla

BERKELEY – The California men's tennis team will send five pairs of Golden Bears to compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship from Friday through Sunday in La Jolla, California. The annual tournament takes place at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, with the final scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

A few matches are scheduled to start Thursday, but most of the first round/round of 128 – including all five Cal openers – will take place Friday.
The Cal duos competing in the open tournament include the team of Kris Kwinta, the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis, and assistant coach Francis Sargeant along with Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck, Alex Chang and Philip Hjorth, Sean Hill and Lucas Magnaudet, and Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright. Kikuchi and Overbeck are seeded second among collegiate players, while Kwinta and Sargeant are seeded 16th among independent players.

Last Time: Cal Routs Army, UNLV
Cal won its last two dual matches in convincing fashion, defeating Army, 7-0, on Feb. 26 and UNLV, 7-0, on Feb. 28 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Against the Black Knights, Cal freshman Carl Emil Overbeck earned his first collegiate clinching win when he defeated Samuel Eden, 6-3, 6-1, at court-three singles to secure the Bears victory. Freshmen Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright wrapped up the doubles point when they bested Nathan Jose and Jake Huarte, 7-5, on court three.
In the win over UNLV, Chen clinched a match for the first time when he beat Zach Garner, 6-4, 6-2, on court five. Earlier, the pair of Overbeck and Yuta Kikuchi clinched doubles with a 7-5 win over Jackson Atherton and Jordan Sauer.
Poll Position
Cal is ranked 38th in the ITA's team poll this week. Cal's top doubles duo of Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck (13-3 record) is still ranked 12th, with new ITA team, singles and doubles rankings scheduled for release on March 8.

Scouting the Bears

  • Yuta Kikuchi, who clinched Cal's 4-0 win over then-No. 23 UCLA on Feb 5, has a singles record of 14-9
  • Philip Hjorth, who clinched the season-opening win over Saint Mary's, and Carl Emil Overbeck, who clinched vs. Army (see below), are tied for the team's most singles victories with 17 each
  • In doubles, Hill and Magnaudet are 2-1, Chang and Hjorth are 1-1, and Chen and Wright are 1-0
  • Kris Kwinta (UCLA '08) is in his first season as the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis
  • Kwinta's staff includes assistant coach and former BYU player Francis Sargeant along with volunteer assistant coach and former professional player Jared Donaldson

Last Time In La Jolla: Draper, Hoffmann Reach 2020 Semifinals
Bjorn Hoffmann and Ben Draper's strong play at the 2020 Pacific Coast Doubles Championship ended on March 8, when the 38th-ranked Cal duo fell in the semifinals at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. The Golden Bears lost to the third-seeded team of USC's Colter Smith and former Trojan Tanner Smith, 6-4, 6-7(5), 13-11. Draper and Hoffmann posted a 5-1 record in La Jolla.
