Golf Takes Fifth at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate

Henderson, Nev- The Utah Men's Golf team finished in fifth place out of a 15-team field at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate after shooting 9-under (855). For the second consecutive tournament, four Utes finished inside the top 30 as the team earned it's sixth straight top five finish.

The Utes opened the three-day tournament tied for sixth after shooting even par (288) through one round of play. The team would have a stronger showing in round two where they made 20 birdies and shot 7-under (290), tied for the lowest round two score with UAB. This allowed them to climb the leader board three spots to head into the third and final round in third-place. The Utes would close out the tournament shooting 2-under (286) to finish in fifth-place.
 
INDIVIDUAL BREAKDOWN
Senior Blake Tomlinson ended day one of the tournament in a tie for 43rd but wouldn't be there for long after an exceptional round two in which he shot 2-under (70)  tying him for 22nd going into the final 18. Tomlinson would keep up his strong play and climb the leader board six more spots to tie for 16th and finish with a tournament score of -2 (214).

Sophomore Javier Barcos also got off to a slow start in round one but would rebound in the second tying for the lowest round of the day (-6, 66) to climb the leader board 35 spots in a tie for eighth after 36 holes. In the final round Barcos shot 4-over (70) to finish T-25, putting him at even par (216) for the tournament. 

True freshmen Braxton Watts finished in a tie for 25th after shooting even par (216) over three rounds of play. Watts would start out the tournament red hot shooting 4-under (68) to land in a tie for fifth. This is the highest Watts has ever finished after a single round of tournament play.

Redshirt Freshmen Martín León tied for 28th shooting 1-over (217) after 54 holes. Leon shot even par in rounds one and three (72) to secure his fifth top 30 finish of the season. Rounding out the team was Tristan Mandur who saved his best round for last shooting 2-under (70) to climb the leader board 13 spots and tie for 42nd, carding a tournament score of 5-over (221). 
 
UP NEXT
The team will be back in action March 6-8, as they compete in the Bandon Dunes Invitational in Bandon, Ore. This will be a three-day 54-hole tournament and is set to be played on the 6,738 yard, par 71, Sheep Ranch Course at Bandon Dunes.
