Meet the Utes: Lauren Peterson

Mar 2, 2022

Next up in our Meet the Utes Feature series, we chat with Lauren Peterson, who recently joined our distance crew this past fall. Peterson is a Junior, studying environmental and sustainability studies with an emphasis in conservation and land management.
Peterson started running with her dad when she was young. She said, "My dad inspired me to run. When I was younger he would run while I biked next to him and eventually I started running with him when I joined youth track!"
Peterson's family continues to motivate her in her running career. "My family inspires me the most because they have always encouraged me to work hard and stay positive through the highs and lows of this sport."
Despite the fact that she started running at a young age, Peterson didn't realize she could run throughout college until halfway through high school. "During my sophomore year of cross country season, I ended up qualifying to two national cross country meets and that made me realize that I could possibly have a chance at competing in college if I continued that trend."
Peterson did continue that trend through high school. In fact, two of the achievements she is proudest of took place her senior year. "I think one of my best accomplishments was earning All-America honors in the mile my senior year at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals. Another highlight was when my team won the Minnesota State Track Meet title."
From there, Peterson ran at Furman before eventually transferring to the University of Utah. "I chose Utah because I liked the team and the goals they had as well as the coaching staff. I also chose Utah for its academics and the many different pathways it has for my major. On top of that, I love the outdoors and Utah has some great places to hike and train in the mountains."
During this past season, Peterson started off her first race as a Ute with a splash. At the Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 23, Peterson set a new PR  in the 6k crossing the finish line at 21:11.6 and helped Utah clinch 1st place. "My favorite memory was the Dellinger Invite because that's when we realized how special our team was and the possibilities ahead."
Peterson has set many goals for herself to achieve in the coming seasons as a Ute. She hopes to earn All-America honors, win a Pac-12 Championship as a team and return to Cross Country nationals in 2022.
