SEATTLE -- The opening week of Pac-12 play takes the 33rd-ranked Husky women's tennis team down to the desert to battle a pair of ranked Sun Devil and Wildcat squads. Washington (9-4) first goes to Tempe, Ariz. to take on 17th-ranked Arizona State on Friday at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time. A day later the Dawgs are in Tucson to battle 44th-ranked Arizona in an 11 a.m. match-up.
The Huskies will be facing nothing but Pac-12 foes from now until one final non-conference match on Apr. 17 against San Francisco. Washington swept Kansas State and Boise State last weekend at home to build some momentum heading into conference play. The Dawgs are ranked 33rd nationally by the ITA this week, but are voted 21st in the USTA poll.
Arizona State jumped up into the top-25 for the first time this week after two big wins over previously No. 30 Kansas and No. 31 San Diego. The Sun Devils are 7-2 with their losses coming against Auburn and Oklahoma State, two top-20 teams. ASU has one ranked doubles team, Patricija Spaka and Domenika Turkovic, who are 49th. Spaka is 8-0 in dual singles play at the five and six spots. Giulia Morlet is playing No. 1 singles for ASU and has gone 4-4.
Arizona is 8-2 to move up to a season-high No. 44 ranking. The Wildcats are coming off a big win over then-No. 26 Alabama, beating the Tide by a 4-3 score. Their only losses came against 24th-ranked Texas Tech and on the road at Michigan State. Kayla Wilkins is 3-3 at No. 1 singles for Arizona and 3-1 at No. 2, while Salma Ziouti is 1-3 at No. 1 but 5-0 at No. 2. Parker Fry has the most dual wins with an 8-0 mark, including 6-0 at No. 5, and Belen Nevenhoven is 5-0 at No. 6 singles.
