Dawgs Split Opening Day of Boyd Gaming Classic

Mar 4, 2022

LAS VEGAS – No. 7 Washington split the opening day of the Boyd Gaming Classic in Las Vegas, run-ruling New Mexico State (14-3, 5), before falling in extras to Houston (4-5, 8).

After a back-and-forth first and second innings, the Dawgs struck early and often in the third, scoring eight runs. Olivia Johnson got the bats going with a sacrifice fly. With loaded bases, Sami Reynolds was then hit by the pitch, walking Madi Huskey home. Baylee Klingler followed with her third grand slam of the season. Huskey finished the scoring for the inning with an RBI single.

Down one heading into the sixth inning against Houston, Jenn Cummings, who had two throw downs in the game, was able to connect and score the game-tying run. When Houston answered in the bottom of the sixth, it was Huskey's hot hitting that was able to bail the Dawgs out. Her three-run home run put the Dawgs ahead, 4-3. Another Cougar home run in the bottom of the seventh sent the game to extras. With a runner starting on second, Houston hit a sac fly to advance and score.
