Women's Hoops Advances to the Pac-12 Tourney Semifinals

LAS VEGAS – The Utah women's basketball is off to the Pac-12 Tournament Semifinals after a 70-59 victory over Washington State. This is the first appearance in the Pac-12 Tournament Semifinals for the Utes.
 
Jenna Johnson led the Utes (19-10) with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Brynna Maxwell came off the bench and scored 11, and Isabel Palmer scored 10 points. Kelsey Rees collected eight rebounds lead the team. The Utes dished out 11 assists against the Cougars (19-10). The Utes set a Pac-12 Tournament record by scoring 29 points in the first quarter of the contest.
 
The Cougars and the Utes came out trading buckets early in the game, and a layup by Jenna Johnson put the Utes ahead 6-5. The leads continued to go back and forth, and a three by Kennady McQueen put the Utes ahead 14-11. Johanna Teder came down and scored, making it 14-13. Utah closed out the first quarter on a 15-0 run as they held the Cougars scoreless for 4:43 of the quarter. Utah put up 29 points in the quarter, setting a new Pac-12 Tournament record for most points in a single quarter. Utah led 29-13 after one-quarter of play.
 
The Utes continued to add to their lead in the second quarter as a  Palmer three-pointer put Utah ahead by 17, 32-15. Utah's hot shooting continued as McQueen and Gianna Kneepkens hit back-to-back threes, and Utah led 38-19 midway through the second quarter. The Cougars trimmed down to 13, but the Utes stretched the lead to 20, 45-25, heading to halftime.
 
Coming of halftime, the Cougars chipped away at the lead as it was down to 15, 47-32, after a Jessica Clarke layup. Washington State would get as close as 12 points in the quarter before a driving layup by Johnson put Utah ahead by 14, 51-37. Over the final three minutes of the quarter, the Utes slowly extended the lead to 18 as Maxwell and Palmer hit four straight free throws. Utah led 59-41 after three-quarters of play.
 
With ten minutes to go, the Utes extended the lead to 22 points, 63-41, after a layup by Johnson and never let the Cougars back into the match. The Utes held onto a 20-plus lead for most of the quarter, but Washington State made a late run. It was too late as the Utes came away with the 70-59 win to advance to the semifinals.

"I'm incredibly proud of our team. I thought our defense was fantastic. We certainly shot the ball great in the first half and threw the first punch there offensively, but then we hung in there defensively. Washington State made a run in the second half, which we knew they would, but we answered the bell and won it handily. It's a great day to be a Ute."
 
GAME LEADERS
Jenna Johnson continued to shine for the Utes as she scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Brynna Maxwell followed with 11 points, and Isabel Palmer rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10. Kelsey Rees collected a team-high eight rebounds.
 
STANDOUT STAT
The Utes came out on fire in the first quarter and scored 29 points. The 29 points sent a Pac-12 Tournament record for most points in a single quarter. In the first quarter, the Utes shot 11-for-17 and hit four three-pointers to set the new Pac-12 record. Jenna Johnson led the scoring for Utah with 10 points.

Utah takes on second-seeded Oregon in the semifinals of the Pac-12-Tournament. The contest will tip at 9:30 p.m. MT from Michelob ULTRA Arena.
