Bears Advance In Pacific Coast Doubles
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Two sets of Cal men's tennis pairs lost in the main draw of the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship on Saturday, while two other sets of Golden Bears advanced to the consolation semifinals of the open tournament at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
The second-seeded Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck – ranked 12th in the ITA poll – fell to Nebraska's Nic Wiedehorn and Victor Moreno Lozano, 6-4, 6-4, in the main draw's round of 16. In the round of 32, Cal's Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright lost to UCLA's fourth-seeded Stefan Leustian and Bryce Pereira, 4-2, 4-2.
Three Cal pairs won in the consolation draw's round of 16, with Sean Hill and Lucas Magnaudet, Alex Chang and Philip Hjorth, and Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis Kris Kwinta and assistant coach Francis Sargeant all reaching the quarterfinals.
One quarterfinal featured the Cal coaches facing off against Bears Hjorth and Chang, with Kwinta and Sargeant prevailing, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(5). Hill and Magnaudet defeated Villanova's Matthew Jones and Josh Robinson, 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Both Cal doubles teams will play in the consolation semis on Sunday at 9 a.m., with the consolation final set for 12 p.m.
