Cougars Fall at No. 44 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. (March 6, 2022) – The 44th-ranked Arizona Wildcats captured the doubles point and the first three singles matches to post a 4-0 victory over Washington State Sunday morning at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
 
The match, originally scheduled to be played Friday, was postponed due to high winds in Tucson and moved to Sunday.
 
In doubles action, WSU's No. 2 duo of Yang Lee and Fifa Kumhom came out fast, earning multiple breaks of serve en route to a 6-1 win over Kayla Wilkins and Kristen Prelle. At No. 1, Arizona's Khim Iglupas and Parker Fry raced to a 5-1 lead before Michaela Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy stormed back to make it 5-4 at No. 1. They drew no closer as the Arizona duo closed out the 6-04 win, pushing the deciding match to No. 3. There, Arizona's Midori Castillo-Meza and Belen Nevenhoven rallied from 1-3 down to defeat Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Elyse Tse, 6-4 to give the Wildcats the opening doubles point.
 
In singles play, Arizona moved ahead 2-0 when Fry completed a 6-1, 7-5 win over Tse at No. 4. The Wildcats closed it out at the bottom of the lineup as Nevenhoven defeated Hania Abouelsaad 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 and Iglupas posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Kumhom at No. 5 for the final margin of victory.
 
With the outcome determined, the remaining three matches on court were stopped. At No. 1 Bayerlova was leading Ziouti 6-4, 4-4, at No. 2 Ly-Nguyen was tied with Wilkins 6-4 4-6, and at No. 3 Murphy and Castillo-Meza were heading to a third set with Murphy winning the first 6-3 and Castillo-Meza the second by an identical score.
 
The Cougars return home after eight-straight away from Hollingbery Fieldhouse as they host Colorado Friday at 11:30 a.m.
