Cal head coach Kris Kwinta (left) and assistant coach Francis Sargeant (right) won the back draw in La Jolla.

LA JOLLA, Calif. – California men's tennis captured the consolation final of the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship when Kris Kwinta, the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis, and assistant coach Francis Sargeant defeated current Cal players Sean Hill and Lucas Magnaudet in Sunday's final of the open tournament.

The Cal coaches beat the Golden Bears, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

"It's cool for the players to see the old guys who are coaching them can still be competitive and know what they're talking about," Kwinta said. "It was fun to see the guys compete, see the guys on the sideline supporting us or maybe supporting the other team. Overall it was fun competition, and hopefully everybody improved a little bit."

Earlier on Sunday in the semifinals, Hill and Magnaudet beat UC San Diego's Daniel Traxler and Jett Cole, 6-2, 6-4, while Sargeant and Kwinta bested Boston College's William Kasten and Jake Vassel, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Both Cal coaches were strong doubles players as collegians: Kwinta was a doubles All-American at UCLA in 2004, while Sargeant was an All-WCC first-team selection in doubles at BYU in 2013.

Besides playing against Magnaudet and Hill in the final, Kwinta and Sargeant also faced Bears Philip Hjorth and Alex Chang in the quarterfinals.

"Maybe it's strange when you see your opponents' names, and they're your players," Kwinta said. "But when you step on the court you have to be able to play hard against anybody, your team, your brothers."

The first-year head coach added, "I'm exhausted. But it's a fun soreness. It was cool to compete and cool to be one of the guys for a couple of days. It was a special event for all involved."

Cal returns to collegiate dual-match play when the Bears host Santa Clara on Friday and then starts Pac-12 Conference action on Sunday, March 13, against Utah at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
