Upset Bid Falls Short At No. 10 Cal

Mar 6, 2022

BERKELEY, Calif. – Oregon won the doubles point to take an early lead but was unable to close the deal in singles play in a 5-2 loss at No. 10 California on Sunday.
How It Happened: The Ducks (8-4, 0-2 Pac-12) jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking a pair of tight matches at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Lillian Mould and Ares Teixido Garcia came out on top in a back-and-forth battle at the No. 2 spot, winning 7-5 after the Ducks fell at the No. 1 spot. The opening point came down to Allison Mulville and Myah Petchey at the No. 3 spot, as the pair won 7-6(6), coming back from down 6-4 in the tiebreaker to win 8-6.
The Ducks couldn't carry that momentum into singles play though, as they fell at the No. 1 and 2 spots to give Cal a 2-1 lead. UO also dropped opening sets at three of the other four spots, meaning the Ducks would need to flip at least two of the four remaining matches to clinch.
Uxia Martinez Moral lost at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-4, before Karin Young put up Oregon's only singles victory of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles, erasing a 4-2 deficit in the second set to win her eighth straight match and move to 9-1 on her freshman season.
Cal (7-5, 1-0 Pac-12) clinched the match with a win at the No. 3 spot, as Ares Teixido Garcia fell 6-1, 6-4. Mould lost the final remaining match at the No. 4 spot, 7-6(7), 6-4.
