Gueye nabs the final Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award

Mar 7, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO – For the fifth and final time in 2021-22, freshman Mouhamed Gueye was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week as the first-year Coug took home his second-straight award of the season, this time for the week ending on March 6. Gueye became the second freshman this season to be named the top newcomer in back-to-back weeks after also earning the award the week prior for his play against the Huskies. His five awards are second most in the conference trailing only Stanford's Harrison Ingram who has earned a league best six weekly awards on the year while Gueye's four during Pac-12 play was the most of any freshman on the year.

No other Coug has earned more than two weekly awards in a single season in program history.

Closing out the regular season with a bang, Gueye led the Cougs to three wins over Oregon State (twice) and Oregon to ensure the team of their first winning season in Pac-12 play since 2007-08. In his first taste of the longest running rivalry in Pac-12 play, Gueye scored 19 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting on the road in Corvallis to lead the Cougs past OSU in overtime as WSU scored 103 points, the most in the over century old series with the Beavers. The performance by Gueye and his teammates led WSU to its first win at OSU since 2013, snapping a six game skid on the road in Corvallis.

Just three days later in Pullman Gueye and the Cougs secured their second win of the week over the Beavers to nab their first home and away regular season sweep of the OSU since 2011-12. To finish off the regular season he would lead the Cougs past Oregon, 94-74, to secure the winning record in conference play for WSU. The 20-point win was the largest over Oregon since 2009 while the 94 point outburst was the most scored in regulation against the Ducks since 1994.

On the weekend Gueye averaged 10.3 points per game on 66.7% shooting while adding 4.7 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game.

Gueye and the Cougs head to Las Vegas to begin the Pac-12 Tournament Wednesday, March 9 at T-Mobile Arena. The 7-seeded Cougs take on 10-seed Cal in the opening round of action at 6 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
