Mar 9, 2022

PULLMAN, Wash.-- Washington State track and field graduate students Sam Brixey and Colton Johnsen punched their tickets for the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.

Sam Brixey
In his final meet as a Washington State track and field team member, the two-time Indoor All-American Sam Brixey will compete in the 60m hurdle event. He qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a personal record time of 7.69, the 12th fastest time in the NCAA this season. His mark also tied Kip Ngeno's 47-year-old record for the fastest 60m hurdle time in WSU History.

The Boise, Idaho native won the 60m hurdle event across four different meets during the regular season and never placed lower than third. He also recorded a 10th place finish with a time of 7.73 seconds at last month's USATF Indoor Track and Field Championships.

This will be Brixey's second-straight appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, as he looks to improve on his perforce last year, where he recorded a time of 7.79 seconds in the 60m hurdles and placed 11th overall.

Colton Johnsen
For the second-straight year, the distance runner from Bellingham, Wash. qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in two events. This year Johnsen qualified for the mile with a time of 3:55.74, the 15th-fastest mark in the NCAA, and the 3,000m with a time of 7:45.80, the 16th-fastest mark in the NCAA for the second-straight season.

Johnsen etched his name in the WSU record book in three different events throughout the season. His indoor mile time of 3:55.74 is the second-fastest mile in WSU history, .09 seconds behind Bernard Lagat's record. His 3,000m mark is also the second-fastest indoor 3,000m in WSU history and seventh fastest overall. Finally, in his first race of the season, he recorded the second-fastest indoor 5,000m in WSU history with a time of 13:34.75, .15 seconds shy of the WSU record.

Last season at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships, he recorded a top-10 finish in the men's 3,000m with a time of 7:57.38 for 10th overall and placed 15th overall in the 5,000m race with a time of 14:01.86.
