Cal Falls To Two Top-10 Opponents

MANOA, HAWAII No. 10 California beach volleyball fell in two top-10 matchups on day one at the Outrigger Queen's Cup on Thursday. The Bears lost a close matchup to No. 9 Hawaii, 3-2 in the afternoon. Cal lost in their second matchup of the day against No. 3 TCU, 4-1.

The Bears played a tightly-contested match against No. 9 Hawaii (8-3), winning matches on courts one and four, while forcing sets to be played beyond 21 on both the second and fifth court. However, they lost both of those extended sets, as Hawaii escaped with a victory on their home court.
Cal claimed the first point of the dual on court four as the duo of Lexi McKeown and Ella Dreibholz claimed the first set 21-14. The second set was tied at 14, but the Bears went on a 7-2 spurt to end the match and give Cal the first point of the afternoon.
The Cal second pair of Ainsley Radell and Ava Mann was down 18-14 in the first set, but they mounted a comeback forcing the game to continue by scoring six of the next nine points. However, the Hawaii pair of Riley Wagoner and Kylin Loker took the first set 27-25. Cal bounced back in the second set, racing out to a 14-7 lead. They held that advantage to win the second set 21-14 and force a third set. Hawaii started fast in the third set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead on their way to a 15-8 win to even the match at one.
On court three, Hawaii was able to claim a straight set victory over the Bears as they won 21-15, 21-15. Maya Gessner and Natalie Martin started hot as they jumped out to a 9-3 lead on court five. The Bears led 18-17, but Hawaii went on a 4-1 run to end the first set and win 21-19. The two pairs played a hotly contested second set as they went back-and forth. The teams were tied at 21 with neither team able to gain separation. However, Hawaii scored three of the next four points to secure the 24-22 set victory.  
The Bears picked up a second point on the top court as Mima Mirkovic and Ana Costa were dominant in the first set on their way to a 21-14 win. The pair continued their fine play in the second set as they recorded another 21-14 victory to make the final score, 3-2.

In the second match of the day, Cal fell to No. 3 TCU by a 4-1 score. The Bears (5-3) lost their second and third matches of the season Thursday, while TCU (11-0) remained undefeated.
On court three, TCU won the first set 21-19, but the Cal duo of Buchner and Delgado took the lead in the second set, 12-9. They closed the set on a 9-4 run to even the pair at one and force a third set. The third set was close as neither team could gain more than a two-set advantage. The match was tied at 13, but Cal was able to claim three of the final four points to win 16-14.
The Bears had a great chance to win the first set on court four as McKeown and Dreibholz led 18-17, but TCU closed on a 4-1 run to win the first set, 21-19. Cal bounced back in the second set, holding a slim lead throughout and coming away with a 21-17 win to force a third set. However, Maria Gonzalez and Ana Vergara prevailed in the third set 15-11.
TCU won in straight sets on court two and court four to go up 3-0 and claim the dual. It was a tight contest at the top position, but TCU pulled out a straight set win 21-15, 21-19. The dual was poised at 18-17 in the second set, but the Horned Frogs claimed the win.

The Bears will be back in action tomorrow as they continue play in Hawaii at the Outrigger Queen's Cup Tournament. Cal will face off with Nebraska at 10 am PT and UC Davis at 4 pm PT at Queen's Beach.
