No. 17 Huskies Knock Off No. 29 Utah With 4-0 Sweep

Mar 11, 2022

SEATTLE – A razor-thin win in doubles was followed by strong work in singles for the 17th-ranked Husky women's tennis team as it handled 29th-ranked Utah, 4-0, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Washington improved to 12-4 and 3-0 in Pac-12 play with its fifth win in a row.

"I thought today was one of our most complete matches," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "The doubles was close, and I was really impressed with how we handled some of that adversity and closing it out was huge, and I think we used the momentum going into singles. We knew we'd have to have a really good performance one to six, Utah is tough. We had some close first sets but stayed disciplined and focused. I think we have a ton of confidence coming off the results last weekend and being back here where we're comfortable."

Washington mixed up its doubles lineup today, with three new pairs. The new No. 1 duo of Vanessa Wong and Nika Zupancic took a 6-3 win over 54th-ranked Goncharova and Dush, but Utah had a 6-2 win on court three over Kelly Leung and Yolanda Lin. It came down to Sarah-Maude Fortin and Hikaru Sato at No. 2 against Huang/Tattini of Utah. The match went to a tiebreak, where Fortin and Sato rallied from 2-5 down to win five points in a row, including a mis-hit volley that just dropped over the net for some good UW luck on match point at 6-5.

From there singles started close, but UW pulled out five of the six first sets to take control.

Zupancic was first to finish in singles, as she had a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Lindsay Hung. Fortin finished just moments later, completing a 6-4, 6-0 win over Emily Dush to make it 3-0 Dawgs.

Hikaru Sato was up 7-5, 6-1, and Vanessa Wong was up a set and in a second set tiebreak, but before they could finish, Kelly Leung got the fourth point to end it. She defeated Madison Tattini, 6-3, 6-3, at fifth singles. Yolanda Lin was in a third set, serving at 2-4, when the match stopped.

The Huskies will aim to reach 4-0 in conference play on Sunday when Colorado comes in for an 11 a.m. match, that looks likely to be played at the Nordstrom Tennis Center based on weather forecasts.
