Perez and Wisz Homer in UCLA's 8-2 Win Over Fresno State
LOS ANGELES – Briana Perez and Delanie Wisz both recorded two-RBI, 3-for-4 nights and launched their fifth home runs of the season in the No. 5 UCLA softball team's 8-2 victory over Fresno State at Easton Stadium on Friday.
Holly Azevedo started in the circle for the Bruins (20-3) and picked up her ninth win of the year in a 5.0-inning, 11-strikeout effort. This is Azevedo's highest win total in a season dating back to her sophomore campaign in 2019 in which she posted an 11-1 record. Azevedo now ranks second in the Pac-12 with a 11.12 K/7 ratio, slotted behind teammate Megan Faraimo.
Azevedo is nearly doubling her previous best K/7 ratio before this season which was 6.79 in 2020 (43 SO in 44.1 innings pitched).
Perez's homer came in the first inning with a solo shot to ignite the UCLA offense. Two batters later, Wisz launched her longball to right center.
Perez's next hit in the second inning – a single up the middle – knocked in Seneca Curo to bring the score to 3-0. Savannah Pola plated two more runs in the next at-bat on a ground ball that went through the Fresno State (3-17) second baseman's legs. Wisz scored another run in her next plate appearance on a single down the left field line.
Maya Brady and Kinsley Washington both recorded RBI-base hits before the night's end.
The Bulldogs scored in the fifth inning on a solo homer off Holly Azevedo – the first allowed this season by Azevedo – and again in the sixth inning via single to right field.
The Bruins conclude the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament tomorrow afternoon with a double-header versus Fresno State at 2 p.m. PT and CSU Bakersfield at 4:30 p.m. PT. Both games will be available for streaming on the UCLA Live Stream.
