Middle blocker Merrick McHenry and opposite Kevin Kobrine earned men's volleyball honors on Monday. McHenry was selected as the Co-National Middle Attacker of the Week by offtheblock.com, while Kobrine was recognized as the Molten/MPSF Defensive Player of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
McHenry hit a combined .618 in last week's matches at Stanford on 34 total attempts. He connected for a match-high 17 kills in a four-set win over the Cardinal on Saturday night. The 17 kills also marked a season-best for McHenry who had a career-high of 18 spikes last season in a contest at Grand Canyon University. His 18.0 point effort in the win over Stanford also was a season-high number.
Kobrine registered season-high totals for block assists (7) and digs (11) in a match during UCLA's win in Palo Alto. He also recorded a season-best tying three service aces and a season-best 18.5 points in that victory. The 11 digs in a match equals the season-best mark by any Bruin player this season. For the two matches, he averaged 2.2 digs and 0.9 blocks per set.
The top-ranked Bruins, 13-3 overall and 5-1 in MPSF action, will take this week off for final exams before returning to the court on Mar. 25 and 26 for a pair of non-league matches at Morehouse College and Fort Valley State in Atlanta. UCLA resumes MPSF play on Mar. 31 with a match at No. 5 USC.
