PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – With a second consecutive quality round in the books, freshman Carolina Melgrati solidified her position in a tie for second place as Arizona carded an 11-over second round to slip to ninth place on the leaderboards entering Tuesday's third and final round. Melgrati's 1-over performance on Monday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge featured another back nine performance that broke par.
"Carolina continues to put together quality rounds and carry positive momentum forward," said head coach Laura Ianello. "Gile also carded a better round today with a four-stroke improvement, which I was proud of as well. Today did not see a lot of low rounds from the entire field, which speaks to the difficulty of play. We will keep at it tomorrow and see if we make a move back up the standings."
Melgrati and junior Gile Bite Starkute sank nine of the team's 12 birdies on Monday to finish the round 1-over and 2-over respectively. Freshman Lilas Pinthier remains in the top 20 of the individual leaderboards at 3-over par after the first two rounds.
The team moved up in par-3 scoring after Monday's round into fourth place at 11-over while Melgrati finished the day in a four-way tie for the best scoring average on par 4's.
The Wildcats will tee off on Tuesday morning in the third and final round of the event. They are within six strokes of the first four teams ahead of them in the standings.
