Beavers Drop Midweek Finale

Mar 16, 2022

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Kyle Dernedde went 3-for-4 and Justin Boyd and Gavin Logan each produced two but No. 5 Oregon State was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 13-7 loss to Grand Canyon Wednesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The teams split the midweek series with the Beavers taking the first game, 9-8, on Tuesday night. OSU is now 12-3 on the year while Grand Canyon is 10-8.

Dernedde singled three times to pace OSU offensively as the Beavers recorded 12 hits on the day. Boyd doubled twice, driving in runs in both the fifth and ninth innings.

Boyd's double in the fifth cut Grand Canyon's lead to 6-3 but the Antelopes answered back with a four-run sixth inning to push their lead to 10-3. The Beavers, down 11-3, pushed runs across in the sixth on groundouts by Wade Meckler and Jacob Melton to make it a six-run game. GCU then scored two in the ninth before Boyd and Garret Forrester pushed home runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Melton extended his hit streak to 17 games with an infield single in the ninth.

Grand Canyon's Carter Young held OSU to six hits and three runs in five innings to pick up the win, improving to 1-2 on the year. AJ Lattery, OSU's starter, took the loss, dropping to 0-1 after allowing two hits and two runs in an inning of work.
