Water Polo Continues MPSF Play at Home

Mar 16, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 9 Sun Devil Water Polo (13-8, 1-1) will finish their first of four conference games of the season at home with No. 4 California (12-2, 1-2) coming to town. The Sun Devils will be facing reigning MPSF Player of the Week in Isabel Williams meanwhile freshman attacker Vanda Baksa was named MPSF Newcomer of the Week.

The game will start at 1:00 pm MST, and will be streamed via the Arizona State Live Stream which can be found here

Head Coach Todd Clapper notes needing to build off of last weekend's success, "We have to carry this momentum from practice this coming week and come out strong from the start."

The Sun Devils come off of a dominating 3-0 weekend after hosting the Second ASU Invitational, and averaged 14+ goals per game while holding opponents to roughly seven goals. As mentioned above, Vanda Baksa earned Newcomer of the Week after a 22 point weekend in Tempe, which was highlighted by a record-setting game against No. 22 Harvard, after setting the single-game assist record, with seven, and single-game point record with 10 total points after taking on three goals against the Crimson. With her seven assists, she broke current Assistant Coach Petra Pardi's single-game six assist record, one that was set in 2014.

Baksa now leads the NCAA in points (102), and field blocks (18), and is second in goals (61) and assists (41). Her 102 points moves her up to third all-time in single-season points in program history. Baksa also played her way into the top-ten single-season program records for both goals scored (7th) and season assists (5th).

California played their third conference game of the season last weekend, and defeated San José State 12-5 in Berkeley. The Golden Bears post a 5-1 record at home, with their only loss coming to UCLA a week prior.

ASU has faced Cal two times already this season including once at home and once in the Stanford invitational, and dropped both contests– though it was a closer margin of defeat in the most recent meeting. All-time the Sun Devils are 8-26 against the Golden Bears, with the most recent win coming at home in last year's MPSF Conference Championship Tournament.
