Bears Conclude Regular Season Saturday
BERKELEY – As they prepare for their last regular-season meet of 2022, the members of California men's gymnastics know that they have work to do before taking on No. 2 Oklahoma this Saturday.
"This is often the most difficult point in the season," said head coach J.T. Okada. "I try to remind the team how it's going to feel reflecting on the season once it is over, that they will want to look back on adverse moments with pride in how they handled themselves."
This will be the first matchup between the Bears and the Sooners since the Stanford Open on Jan. 29, where Cal posted its second-highest team score of the season (393.000). It will also be the team's first true travel meet since Feb. 4th's Pac-12 Invite in Seattle.
Although Cal faces a number of daunting obstacles (a long travel day and a daunting opponent not least among them), it will be in a position to do well if the team's best units can perform to their full potential. At the Senior Day meet against Stanford, the Bears combined for a total of 70.450 points on vault, a season-high, boosted by Seth Ornelas' massive PR of 14.300 in the event. Yu-Chen Lee also posted two scores above 14.000 points at that meet, finishing with 14.050 in the floor exercise and 14.200 in the vault.
To date, the season leaders for each event are Kyle Abe (floor, 14.150), Aidan Li (pommel horse, 14.000), Yu-Chen Lee (still rings, 13.600), Caleb Rickard (vault, 14.550; horizontal bar, 13.450) and Noah Newfeld (parallel bars, 14.350).
Live results for Saturday's matchup will be posted on StatBroadcast, with the first event commencing at 3:00 p.m. PT.
