Mar 17, 2022
Josh White ranks third nationally with 40 strikeouts entering Cal's weekend series at USC.

BERKELEY – California baseball travels south this weekend to face USC in the second Pac-12 series of the season. The action gets underway at 6 p.m. PDT Friday from Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles, and all three games will be live streamed via Pac-12 Plus.
Fresh off a high-powered 17-5 win at San José State on Tuesday, the Golden Bears (8-8, 1-2 Pac-12) are in pursuit of their first weekend series victory. Cal opened the 2022 campaign with a sweep of the MLB4 Tournament field in Scottsdale on Feb. 18-20 but has dropped three straight series to UIC, No. 10 Florida State and No. 16 Arizona in the weeks since.
USC (11-4, 2-1) entered this week ranked 25th nationally by Baseball America after winning two of three at rival UCLA in the opening Pac-12 series. The Trojans most recently lost a 7-1 contest to UConn at home on Tuesday.

  • Josh White has been exceptional on Friday nights for Cal, ranking third nationally with 17.14 strikeouts per nine innings. Despite being without a decision in four starts, White is stifling opposing batters with a .181 average against and a 2.14 ERA in 21.0 innings pitched.
  • Cal is 4-4 against nationally-ranked opponents this season and will get a shot at another such opponent in No 25 (Baseball America) USC this weekend. Half of Cal's first 16 games played have been against ranked foes.
  • The Bears posted season highs in runs (17), hits (18), extra-base hits (8) and strikeouts on the mound (16) in a 17-5 win at San José State on Tuesday. Caleb Lomavita drove in five runs, Dylan Beavers scored four times and six of Cal's seven pitchers used worked scoreless appearances on the mound.
  • Cal is 6-2 when scoring at least six runs this season.
  • Dylan Beavers has homered in two straight games and ranks second in the Pac-12 with six overall. The preseason All-American and Golden Spikes Award watch list selection is slashing .277/.392/.585 with a team-high 17 RBI and 17 runs scored.
  • The freshman trio of Caleb Lomavita, Rodney Green Jr. and Carson Crawford continue to excel in their rookie seasons. Lomavita is second on the team in home runs (4) and RBI (13) to go along with four stolen bases. Despite a team-high 26 strikeouts, Green Jr. is 12-for-23 with seven extra-base hits when he puts the ball in play. Crawford, though batting .231, has driven in at least one run in the past four games while starting all 16 games at third base defensively.
