BERKELEY – Although Saturday's weather forecast in the Bay Area looks dreary, California track & field refuses to let the climate deter them from competing for top marks in their second outdoor meet of 2022. The Cardinal Classic, which is slated to begin on March 19 at 12:20 p.m. PT, will be hosted at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field and will feature many of the Bears' top athletes, some of which will be making their 2022 outdoor debuts.

"Competing in rainy and cold weather should hopefully improve our toughness," said assistant coach Dan Lefever, who leads the vertical jump and multi-event squads. "We're an outdoor-focused team, so we're all very excited to really get into the outdoor season."

In addition to Cal's entries, the Cardinal Classic will also play host to competitors from Academy of Art, Cal State East Bay, Northern Colorado, San Francisco, San Jose State, Sonoma State, St. Mary's and Stanford.

At the Cal Opener on March 5, the Bears tested their depth and recorded stellar results while doing so. Junior Jasmine Blair set a massive personal best in the discus throw with a toss of 56.67m (185-11) to move up to second in program history, while freshman Amelia Flynt posted a shot put mark of 16.08m (52-9.25) to claim the fifth-farthest throw on Cal's all-time list. The Bears also competed in their first relay of 2022, with Jenea Spinks, Ezinne Abba, Maisie Stevens and Aysha Shaheed accruing a 4x100m time of 44.98 that ranks 10th in school history.

Prior to the Cal Opener, several current Bears already owned spots on Cal's all-time outdoor top 10 list. Abba is the current program record-holder in the 100m dash and also boasts the seventh-best 200m time, while Stevens owns the seventh-best time on the 100m list. Camryn Rogers owns the collegiate record in the hammer throw; juniors Anna Purchase and Jasmine Blair have also reached hammer throw marks good for second and seventh on the Bears' hammer throw list, respectively. Three men's throwers – Josh Johnson, Ivar Moisander and Iffy Joyner – respectively sit at second, sixth and ninth in the shot put, hammer throw and discus throw. Junior Asha Fletcher has the sixth-best long jump and triple jump in program history, while senior Hawa Wague is tied for sixth all-time in the high jump. Senior Margie Cullen and junior Amari Turner round out the group, with Cullen owning Cal's sixth-fastest time in the 3000m steeplechase and Turner tying for ninth in program history in the pole vault.
