Dawgs Take Game One Of Boeing Apple Cup Series 3-2
Husky Ballpark is always electric when the Dawgs and Cougs match up as part of the Boeing Apple Cup Series and tonight was no different. A crowd of 667 showed up for this first game of the Huskies' Pac-12 home opener as the Dawgs sent Sophomore RHP Jared Engman to the mound.

The game got interesting early as the Cougars hit a one-out double to right. The runner then advanced to third on a balk and the Cougars were ready to pounce. The next batter ripped a shot to the hot corner. The runner bolted to the plate, but third baseman Michael Snyder fielded it cleanly and fired home to catcher Johnny Tincher for the tag at the plate.

Husky bats were ready today as McKay Barney and Johnny Tincher both led off with singles. Will Simpson followed with a line drive toward the shortstop, but a quick leap earned him the catch. Coby Morales grounded out to first, but was able to advance the runners. AJ Guerrero followed with a walk to load the bases getting Husky fans excited early, but a Preston Viltz strikeout kept the score at zeroes.

The Cougars led the inning off with a walk. A sacrifice bunt followed by a ground out put a runner on third for the second time in as many innings. The next batter singled to center field to give the Cougars the early 1-0 lead.

Cam Clayton was having none of the Husky zero on the board and launched a one-out blast into the Cougar bullpen to tie things up. Two batters later, Barney took a pitch to the back of the ribs that definitely left a mark. You could tell he felt it, but that didn't stop him from taking his place on first and soon after stealing second. Tincher dug into the batters box next and drove a single to left field bringing Barney around to score, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

Viltz was hit by a 2-2 pitch and sent to first base. A wild pitch got him to second, followed by a trip to third following a Clayton ground out. With two outs, Josh Urps laced a line drive to center field for the RBI putting the Huskies up 3-1.

Stefan Raeth was on the mound as the 8th got underway and the first batter connected with a long ball that escaped the yard just inside the left field foul pole to pull the Cougars within one at 3-2.

Ryan Velazquez came in to close things out in the ninth. Clinging to a one-run lead Husky fans had a bit of a scare when a high fly ball sailed to left field. With his back against the wall, Cole Miller made the catch sending sighs of relief throughout the stadium. The Cougars ultimately went 1-2-3 to end the game giving the Huskies a 3-2 victory.
Starter Jared Engman earned the win going 5.2 innings and giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts. Ryan Velazques earned his second save of the season.
