Men's Tennis Falls to #26 San Diego
SAN DIEGO – The Utah men's tennis squad finished their first match of the weekend against the USD Toreros. The Utes fell short in the battle for the doubles point, and USD took the upper hand in the match, leaving several matches unfinished for a final score of 4-0.
Doubles play started with a battle for the Utes. After Mathias Gavelin and Jayson Blando fell to the Torero duo 6-1 on court three, Utes Francisco Bastias and Bruno Caula won against USD's No. 2 team 6-4. The point was to be decided on court one, where Utah's Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman put up a tough fight against the opposition of August Holmgren and Gui Osorio, who is ranked #66. Despite their efforts, Utah ultimately lost the match 6-4, awarding USD with their first match point.
As the match moved to singles, the Utah squad looked to recover from USD's advantage, needing four matches to win. The Torero's second point came on court one, where Bastias fell short 6-0, 6-1. Capalbo lost his match on court two, finishing 6-1, 6-1. The match was clinched on court five, where Gavelin's opponent took the upper hand, defeating him 6-4, 6-1, and clinching the match.
On court three, Espin Busleiman won the first set 6-4 and was leading the second set 4-1 but remained unfinished. On court four, Caula had won the first set 6-4 and was leading 3-2 in the second before the match was clinched. Similarly, Bruno Krenn had an unfinished match on court six with a 5-7 in the first set and tied 3-3 in the second.
