Tyreese Turner Records 3 RBI; No. 25 USC Baseball Opens Series With 6-2 Win Over Cal
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team scored six early runs and then rode the arms the rest of the way to pick up a series-opening 6-2 win over Cal on Friday night at Dedeaux Field.
Five of USC's runs came in the first inning as the Trojans move to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in Pac-12 play. Cal falls to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
After the early offensive explosion, Jaden Agassi would toss 5.0 innings in the start, with the only two runs credited against him coming after he left with a pair on in the sixth. Carson Lambert let the two inherited runners score, but was nails the rest of the way, throwing 3.0 innings to keep the Trojans in front heading into the ninth. Matt Keating tossed a scoreless final frame, retiring all three batters he faced.
The first four USC batters of the game reached safely and scored, with Tyresse Turner getting things started with a two-run triple in the first. Trevor Halsema followed with a run-scoring double and Garret Guillemette tripled home Halsema later in the inning. Nick Lopez would make it 5-0 USC with an RBI groundout.
Turner followed with his third RBI of the day in the second, scoring Rhylan Thomas with a sacrifice fly. Thomas finished the game 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Cal's only two runs of the day came in the sixth inning, when Cole Elvis doubled home a pair.
