Faraimo Blanks Arizona in UCLA's 5-0 Win to Start Pac-12 Play
LOS ANGELES – Megan Faraimo twirled her third shutout of the season in the No. 4 UCLA softball team's 5-0 victory over No. 9 Arizona to open Pac-12 play at Easton Stadium on Saturday night.
Seneca Curo recorded her third multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Maya Brady blasted her team-leading ninth home run of the year in the contest as well.
Faraimo picked up two of her 11 strikeouts on the evening in a 1-2-3 first inning for the Bruins (23-3, 1-0 Pac-12). The other out was an over-the-shoulder catch by shortstop Briana Perez in shallow left field.
Delanie Wisz put the Bruins on the board in the bottom half of the first by pounding her second double of the season into the right-center gap to plate Kinsley Washington. Wisz has now reached base safely in 17-straight games and every game of UCLA's 16-game winning streak.
Curo's first RBI single of the night came in the fourth inning to score Brady from second base.
The Wildcats (19-5, 0-1 Pac-12) threatened to score in the top of the sixth when Faraimo walked two Arizona batters with no outs. Faraimo induced two groundball force outs at third base over the next four pitches, and then struck out sophomore Allie Skaggs on three straight to get out of the jam.
The Bruins tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom half behind a home run from Maya Brady to dead center coming on a 3-0 count. Curo followed up with another RBI base hit to left field, and after getting bunter over by Kelli Godin on the sacrifice, she was promptly knocked in by a Kinsley Washington dribbler through the right side.
Faraimo shut the door with two strikeouts in the seventh inning. She has now struck out 37 of the last 51 batters she's faced.
UCLA is back in action tomorrow at Easton Stadium for game two versus Arizona (12 p.m. PT). The contest is available for viewing on the Pac-12 Networks.
