Maile O'Keefe Named 2022 Pac-12 Specialist of the Year
SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah gymnast Maile O'Keefe has been named the 2022 Pac-12 Specialist of the Year, the conference office announced Saturday afternoon. The honor for O'Keefe marks the third-straight Pac-12 Specialist of the Year honor received by a Red Rock after Kim Tessen (2020) and Alexia Burch (2021) earned the previous two yearly awards.
O'Keefe competed on bars and beam in all but one competition this season, while she has been a starter in the floor lineup in eight competitions. The Las Vegas native is currently ranked fourth in the country on beam and first in the Pac-12 with a 9.965 National Qualifying Score and has scored two Perfect 10s on the apparatus. She has posted a 9.925 or better on beam in eight of 10 routines.
O'Keefe, who is the reigning national champion on the uneven bars, has scored a 9.875 or better on bars in eight of 10 competitions and earned the first 10.0 of her career on bars against Minnesota. During the same meet, she became just the fourth Ute in school history to post two 10.0s in the same meet after she did so on bars and beam. She is the first Red Rock since 1999 to post two perfect scores in the same competition.
She is averaging above a 9.880 on all three events this season and has posted eight event victories, which ranks second on the team behind Utah's sole all-arounder throughout the season in Grace McCallum. O'Keefe has hit 29-29 routines this season and leads Utah with 113-113 hit routines in her career. She has scored a 9.875 or better in 22-of-29 routines this season and a 9.925 or better in 13-of-29 routines. O'Keefe was a two-time Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week, while also earning one selection as a Pac-12 Specialist of the Week.
O'Keefe and the fourth-ranked Utah gymnasts compete for a conference title tonight (Saturday) in the second session of the Pac-12 Championships at 6 p.m MT at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah.
