Small Group Works Outdoors In West Seattle
SEATTLE – A group of eleven Huskies made the drive out to West Seattle Stadium to open up the outdoor track and field season with the Doris Heritage Track Festival, hosted by Seattle Pacific. Washington will gear up for a full team outdoor opener next week at the Raleigh Relays.
Highlights included a big PR by over half a second in the 400m hurdles from sophomore Jonathan Birchman. He easily won the race in a time of 52.04 seconds. Second went to freshman teammate Matthew Wilkinson, who finished in 54.38.
Junior Aaliyah Wilson dominated the women's 100-meter dash, as she won in a wind-aided time of 11.85 seconds.
It was a busy day for UW's multi-eventers. Former Pac-12 heptathlon champion Hannah Rusnak took second in the 200-meters in 25.41 and third in the shot put at 39-7 ¼. First Team All-American Ida Eikeng was fourth in the shot put at 38-0 ¾ and won the javelin with a toss of 158-8.
Ollie Thorner was second in the 400-meters in 50.40 and seventh in the shot put at 41-5, while Jami Schlueter ran 52.02 in the 400-meters and threw 41-7 ¾ in the shot. Sam Baricevic ran a 400m time of 50.85 seconds.
Jelani Heath had a win in the long jump at 18-10, and was fourth in the 200-meters in 25.91.
Freshman Ashley Smith had a best javelin toss of 136-5 on her sixth and final attempt to take second behind Eikeng. Tanya Simora was third at 127-1.
