De Mello Breaks Program's 100m Hurdle Record

Mar 20, 2022

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State track and field freshman hurdler Micaela De Mello broke the program outdoor 100m hurdle time, as she won the event at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Arizona in 13.08 seconds to win the event. It is the fastest 100m hurdle time in NCAA Division I this season, while it is the fourth-best time worldwide this year.

De Mello broke Diana Pickler's record for the fastest 100m hurdle time in program history. Pickler completed the event in 13.25 seconds back in 2007 in Sacramento.

Washington State split up the team during the first week of outdoor competition, sending student-athletes to the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe and the Sam Adams Classic in Spokane, Washington. The Cougars had four first-place finishes, while a total of 19 student-athletes posted a top-three finish on the weekend.

"It was an awesome week of training and competing," said WSU Track and Field Head Coach Wayne Phipps. I am very proud of the way our team executed all aspects of this spring break trip. The Baldy Castillo featured some of the top programs in the nation and ASU did a great job hosting. We had some amazing performances including school records, two nation-leading performances, a nation second-best performance, and other top-10 in the nation marks."

Sophomore Caroline Jerotich won the women's 3,000m steeplechase at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in 10:27.85. It is the fastest 3,000m steeplechase time in NCAA Division I this season and the eighth fastest time recorded in the event in program history.

Graduate student Mitch Jacobson captured a first-place finish in the men's high jump, clearing 2.15m. It is the second-best mark in the outdoor high jump in NCAA Division I this season.

Sophomore Tara Koonce won the women's hammer throw at the Sam Adams Classic. Koonce landed a toss of 54.97m to win the event. The mark also establishes a new personal-best throw in the event for the Everett, Washington.

Freshman Nana Gyedu set WSU's freshmen record in the shot put at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. She threw 15.02m in Tempe to break Shannon Rance's previous program-high mark of 15.01m set back in 2001 in Austin, Texas.

"We had several event wins and a number of huge PRs," stated Wayne. "Our freshmen were also extremely impressive. Micaela (De Mello) breaks not only a freshman record but a school record in the 100m hurdles. Nana (Gyedu) broke the freshman shotput record and Ronald (Gueso-Mosquera) and Valentina (Barrios Bornacelli) put up marks that will most likely qualify them for the first round of NCAAs. It is very early in the season, but it was great to see so many marks that not only rank high now but will likely be impactful later in the season. An outstanding way, on so many levels, to start our season; and I am very excited to continue to watch the progress and growth of this team throughout the season."

The Washington State track and field team will be back in action this week, as the Cougars head back up to Spokane to compete in the Buc Scoring/Combined Events Scoring Meet at Whitworth University. The meet begins Thursday, March 24, and runs through Friday, March 25.
