Sevaaetasi Leads Beavers to Victory at Grand Canyon, in Extras

Mar 21, 2022

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The No. 23-ranked Oregon State softball team took home a thrilling 6-5 extra-inning victory at Grand Canyon on Monday to wrap up its four-game Arizona trip. Charity Sevaaetasi delivered the game-winning RBI in the top of the eighth inning as the Beavers snapped their three-game losing skid.

Sevaaetasi had a day, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, two runs scored and was one of two Beavers who went yard against the Lopes. Oregon State (23-7) compiled eight hits scattered across seven different Beavers. Madison Simon collected the other three RBIs on the day after her 1-for-2 performance with a three-run home run.

The Beavers got on the board in the top of the second, as Sevaaetasi went yard over the left center wall as OSU secured the 2-0 advantage heading into the third. GCU pulled within one after breaking through Sarah Haendiges in the bottom third off two hits and a Beaver error.

After a scoreless 1.5 innings, the Lopes took the 3-2 lead heading into the sixth after connecting on two of their 11 on the day.  With two outs in the sixth, Simon's three-run bomb boosted the Beavers in front once again by a score of 5-3.

GCU stormed back in the bottom half, scoring two runs off relief pitcher Tarni Stepto who was coming off an eight-inning pitching performance Sunday against Arizona State in the series finale.

Stepto and GCU's pitcher went on to exchange a scoreless seventh as OSU went into its second consecutive extra-inning game.

Junior Frankie Hammoude got things started with a deep fly ball to center field, advancing pinch runner Jade Soto to third before Sevaaetasi ripped an infield single up the middle. Stepto earned the win in the final frame after retiring the side that was highlighted by a strikeout and a grounder to second base.

The Beavers return home next weekend for a Pac-12 series with Stanford, beginning on Friday, March 25.
