De Mello Named Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Week

Mar 22, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO – Washington State track and field freshman hurdler Micaela De Mello was named the Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Week by the league offices Tuesday, March 22. It is the first time that De Mello has earned the distinction in her WSU career.

The freshman from Palhoca, Brazil broke Washington State's 100m hurdles record this past Saturday, March 19, at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Arizona. De Mello clocked in at 13.08 seconds to win the 100m hurdles. She broke Diana Pickler's previous program record by 0.17 seconds, which was set back in 2007 in Sacramento.

De Mello's time is currently the fastest clocked timed in the 100m hurdles in the NCAA this season, while it is the fourth-fastest recorded time in world this year.

The freshman from Brazil becomes the first Washington State track and field student-athlete to be named a Pac-12 Track Athlete of the Week since May 1, 2018, when Alissa Brooks-Johnson earned the distinction.

The Washington State track and field team is back in action March 24-25, as the Cougars head back up to Spokane to participate in the Buc Scoring Invitational at Whitworth University. Check back with WSUCougars.com for a full preview of this week's meet.
